Robotics + Art

Many artists , whether it’d be singers, painters, or even movie writers have been known to throw out ideas through their art, that scientists feed off of and decide to bring to life. Shows like “Back to the Future”, where they first introduced the “Nike Air Mag 2015” shoe that had automatic laces, influenced Nike to eventually come out with that shoe collection, which they did in 2015.  In part 2 of Professor Vesna’s weekly lecture “Robotics + Art”, she gives us a well suited example for this. A theater play writer known as Karel Capek introduced “the robot” in his play “R.U.R” in 1921 for the purpose of labor. His play included a lot of realistic details about robots which pushed scientists to develop real robots, making it true that art, in fact, does influence technology.

Reading Walter Benjamin's work was very interesting because of his particular views.  In his article “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” he talks about how he believes that mechanical reproduction puts a halt to originality, creativity & uniqueness. I personally do not agree because I feel that absolutely nothing has the power to stop one’s creativeness and uniqueness. In fact, mechanical reproduction most likely stimulates the brain and encourages artists and scientists to step outside of the box and find new ways to use what they already have. It's the simple process of innovation. Apple is very well known for this. Every two years, they come out with a new iphone that has gone through the innovation process and each time they are successful with selling and making profit.
