BioTech + Art
I believe that human creativity is one of the most beautiful things in world. Without it, we wouldn't have a lot of the things we obtain today that make our lives easier. However, as we all know, nothing i perfect and every good thing does have its bad side. Human creativity can sometimes be our worst enemy. Why ? Because when creating things, we often don't take into account that what we produce can negatively affect our well being. We fail to be careful enough to minimize the chances of creating and distributing things that can harm us and therefore, human creativity should be limited when it affects a large amount of a population.

Image result for gmosIn this week’s lesson, we discussed the mixture of the biotechnology and art worlds. Specifically, we went over the topic about GMOs also known as genetically modified organisms. I found this topic to be quite interesting because it is a prime example of human creativity that is both beneficial and non-beneficial. GMOs are essentially beneficial because they allow us to produce more of what we need at an unusually faster pace. This way, there is a surplus of food and not many go hungry because there is lack of food. However, it can also be deemed non-beneficial because it's simply not the healthiest type of food. GMOs have shown to cause chronic illnesses over a long period of time of consuming them.

I didn’t agree with this idea simply because I feel that it goes against nature. This reminded me of Orlan and the other people in the world who have modified themselves to have non-human like features. The biotech world coming together with the art world is something definitely risky that should be done carefully and by those who know how to handle it.

  1. Nice work! I hadn't ever thought about creativity being a bad thing, but when you put it like that- negatively affecting people- I found myself agreeing with your perspective. As far as the modifying of human bodies, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one that didn't agree with those ideas. Sure it really is their body and they may do with it what they want, but quite frankly, I was a bit disturbed by it. Again, good job!
